Charles Baker, an Illinois native, traveled to the gold camp of Virginia City, Montana Territory, by wagon in 1864-1865, via the Bridger Cutoff trail. Baker's diary (1864-1867) details his travels, experiences in Virginia City, and his return to Illinois by steamboat in 1867. (SC 1275) Charles W. Ruth Baker compiled a family genealogy in 1952.

Charles W. Baker was born May 14, 1838, in Illinois, the first of eleven children of James Alexander and Catherine (Fleming) Baker. As a young man he taught school. Then in 1864 he caught gold fever and headed west. He travelled by wagon via the Bridger Cutoff trail. and arrived in Virginia City, Montana Territory, on July 28, 1864.
